Remodeling during the recession pros and cons

Remodeling any home is always going to cost money, but just how much is never a guarantee. With the economy the way it is now, remodeling during the recession definitely has its pros and cons. Let's take a look at what's going to cost you more, and what will cost you less when it comes to remodeling and what you can do save a buck here and there.
Recession remodeling pros
There are always advantages and disadvantages to everything you do. Remodeling a home is no different so here are some pros to starting a remodel during a recession:
- Labor is generally cheaper. Work is usually hard to come by during a recession so contractors and sub-contractors will lower their prices for labor in the hopes that they can generate more business. You can sometimes even find contractors and sub-contractors that will charge about the same price as it would cost you to do it yourself. You can't beat that.
- During a recession you might be able to find great deals on the materials you need to remodel your home. If you're making the same amount of money as you were making before the economy hit the recession, you might be able to get twice as much for your money.
- Sometimes with cheap labor you get cheap work. You can't always tell what kind of work your contractor or sub-contractor will do because they're not getting paid what they think they're worth. If they're a good contractor they will do a great job anyway, regardless of the price they are charging, however you can't ever be 100% sure.
- You may put a lot of work into remodeling your home because you're trying to sell and might not get back what you've put in. Many times during a recession the value of homes will drop; some slightly, and others drastically. So if you're planning on being in the home for some time it might be worth your time and money. If you're thinking of an immediate move once you're finished the remodel then you may be out some money, even though you've just fixed things up.
- Most remodels happen in the kitchens and bathrooms; countertops and cabinets. One way to save some money is to use recycled materials for your countertop. There are a lot of choices when it comes to recycled glass and they can look beautiful in your kitchen. Instead of replacing cabinets, try to just refinish them. This will save you a lot of money.
- Don't hire out to have the work done. If it's possible try and do most of the work on your own. Then the only money you have to spend is to get the materials; not labor.
- Quick fixes like painting walls or changing fixtures can make a home look and feel entirely different but they don't take a lot of time or money
Remodeling during the recession definitely has its pros and cons; however it's important to also keep within a budget. Weigh the pros and cons out before you decide to tackle a big project. Once you've made your decision stick with it and work until it's done.
