Remodeling the Nursery

If you have an existing nursery in your home and you are looking to remodel the nursery, here are some ideas to help you get started. First, begin with a theme. Do you want your nursery to feature cute animals from storybooks or do you want to go with a new, modern look? Quite often the nursery is designed to coordinate with the other rooms in the home.
The furniture in your nursery will go a long way with the remodel. If you have high-end furniture in the rest of your home, your nursery should feature the same. Quite often you can find high end baby furniture from the same companies who you purchased your furniture from. By modernizing the nursery to match the rest of your home, you no longer have a room that exists solely for the use of an infant, instead you will find decorations that are a smaller version of what you will find in other rooms like the master bedroom.
If you need to expand the space in your nursery, take a look at what you can eliminate. The closet space in many rooms can be used as an extra area that is perfect for a changing table or rocking chair. If the closet in your nursery is large, consider removing the doors and making this an extension of the room. The closet doors can also be removed and the entire area can feature several shelves to store all the baby clothes and other items.
When you are looking at the nursery, be sure to consider the lighting. Babies rooms should be bright and comfortable. If you have windows, consider replacing the blinds with softer window treatments that allow the natural light to illuminate the room. The ceiling light should also include a dimmer switch so you can change the diaper at the 3 am feeding without hurting your eyes and disturbing the baby too much. A nice lamp should be considered if you cannot afford to install new lights.
Going back to the furniture, choosing the crib is the most important piece of furniture in the nursery. The crib will help you set the design for the entire nursery. Cribs come in several styles such as: canopy, sleigh, standard, corner, traditional, and several others. As you are picking the design for the nursery, the crib should match it. The design features you need to consider when you are remodeling the nursery include" drop down rail, storage drawers, teething rails, and rolling casters. Your changing table and dresser should match the crib. If you purchase a crib that can convert into a toddler bed, be sure to select a style that will "grow with your baby" so it doesn't look to young when your baby reaches the age of 8 or older. The finishes and colors of the crib, changing table, and dresser should all match each other too.
In the past many nurseries featured a shelf that lined the entire room around the top of the wall. This was used for decoration purposes. The new design style is to remove the shelf and leave the wall untouched except for wall hangings or other decorations. The wall should be stripped of old paint (especially if it contains lead) and refinished with a new, crisp color. The colors for nurseries now include lighter pastels such as green, blue, yellow, and brown. A fresh coat of paint is an easy way to remodel your nursery if you are on a budget.
The final piece to complete the nursery is a rocking chair. If you have money in your budget and enough room, consider the rocking chair as you will spend many hours in it bonding with your new baby.
