Remodeling to bring an old house up to code
When you are doing remodeling on an old house one thing that you will want to make sure that you concentrate on is bringing the old house up to code. If you don't know what types of things need to be brought up to code here are a few examples if what you can do when remodeling to bring an old house up to code.
The first example is the electrical. In older homes you will find that if you run the stereo along with a blow dryer you might blow a fuse because there are not a lot of loads on a circuit. Because of this you will get a lot more blown fuses then you would if you had up to date electrical where the wires are able to handle bigger loads. Also you will be able to plug things in. With the old outlets you have to use a special adapter to even plug in modern day conveniences like lamps and other things. This is another reason why you might want to update the electrical.
The second example is the insulation. If you are totally gutting an old house down to the studs it is a good idea to replace the insulation. Insulation today is going to be a lot better then the insulation they had way back when. Also if the old house you are redoing has wood paneling there is a good chance that there is not even insulation behind the wood paneling which can also cause you problems when it comes to your heating bills.
The third example is the lighting. A lot of the lighting in old houses does not give off a lot of light. It is also very common not to have a lot of lights through out the house because they use to use a lot of lamps. Because of this reason you will want to make sure that you pay attention and put more lighting where there are dark areas.
The fourth example is if there is a fireplace. If there is a fireplace you will want to make sure that it has the correct ventilation that is needed along with the correct structure. There are a lot of things that were built in the old days that worked then but are not safe now. This is why it is important to pay attention to structure and if you have questions make sure to get them answered.
The fifth example is if there is aspestis is your ceilings or any other part of the house. You will want to make sure that you hire some one to come remove all of it. Aspestis is bad for your health and you do not want to be breathing it in. You will want to make sure that you have the professionals come remove it since they deal with it more regularly then you do.
These are just some of the examples of remodeling to bring an old house up to code. Depending on how old the house is that you are remodeling will depend on how much needs to be done to make sure you bring it up to code. You will also want to make sure that before you start your project that you have an inspector come out so that he/she can give you advice on what they can see needs to be done so that you can get an idea of where you want to start your remodeling job at.
