Being more environmentally conscious is something that many people are thinking about. They want to make sure that what they are doing won't hurt their children or their grandchildren. Remodeling and changing things around your house to be more energy efficient and more friendly to the environment will help to keep our planet safe for us all. Here are some tips and things that you need to know when you remodel your house to go green.

First off, if you are buying new appliances, there are many that are Energy Star approved. They are the best on energy consumption and will do more than help the environment. They use less energy to run, saving you money and saving energy too. They perform fine and are just as good if not better at what they are supposed to do. Just because a washer is energy efficient doesn't mean that it won't really wash your clothes, it just means that your clothes are getting washed at a cheaper cost to you. They might cost a little more upfront, but will save you money in the end.

If you have old appliances that you are getting rid of, the government or your power company might give you a discount for getting rid of your old one or for buying a new one. Check with your city or your power company to check. They also might haul away your old one for free.

Use recycled materials for your remodel. When people see recycled paint or flooring, they usually think of dirty paint being in the can and wood that isn't the best quality. It's not like that at all. When something is recycled it just means that they use products from the old paint or wood to make something new. The old products are cleaned probably better than the originals were, and are basically new. They are just more energy efficient. Try using them in your remodel. You will save money and will be going green at the same time.

A huge remodel to go green would be to put up a windmill or solar panels for energy. They are very energy efficient and can save you tons of money, but you still have to pay a lot up front. You also have to pay a lot to maintain everything. If you are considering this type of remodel, make sure that you are following all city codes, any Home Owners Association rules and safety rules. Solar panels can save you a lot of money, but you have to do your homework. Things like windmills aren't always welcome in the neighborhood. Sometimes it doesn't save you money, but it can still help the environment.

When you build or remodel a home and go green, you are often spending a little more money upfront, but then get it back within a year. The money you save from appliances and from power costs overtakes the money that you spent buying the energy efficient water heater or dishwasher. Plus your home is usually worth more if it is energy efficient and has Energy Star appliances. Try going green the next time you remodel.
