Remodeling your closet or storage space

Having extra spaces in your home takes a little time and ingenuity. Most homes have enclosed staircases that can be used as valuable storage space. You can turn the space under your stairs into a storage space or closet. Create the space under your stairs to be a storage space for holiday decorations, a pantry, or even a space for your children's toys.

You should take advantage of every part of space in the storage closet by creating a wheeled, wedge-shape container that will fit into the farthest area under the stairs. Shelves can be installed to create storage for books, decorative items, toys, glassware, china, and many other things. Heavy items will need heavier brackets that are securely anchored so they don't break or bow in the middle.

Another area in your home that can be used as a storage space is your hallway. If you have a hallway that is large enough, you can line it with shelves or shallow cabinets. Many apartments don't have a lot of storage space or a closet. Purchase a decorative folding screen and place it in a corner of your home that is rarely used. This area can be a closet to store needed items like golf clubs, skis, and other items without distracting from the look of your room.

You can also create storage space between the studs in your walls. If your home is built with drywall and studs, you can add shallow shelves or cabinets between the studs. To build the storage space, locate the studs with a stud finder and use a saber saw to cut the wall and then remove the drywall or plaster. Cut two 2x4s that will fit the top and bottom of the opening and then nail them into the studs. Using wood or wallboard, line the enclosure and paint the opening. If you want to make the storage space enclosed, you will need to buy a door or make a door that is the size of your opening and install a magnetic hinge inside the side panel.

Storage space can be created anywhere in your home with a few helpful tools. In your bathroom, use a wicker basket on the bathroom wall that will store towels, soap, tissues, bath toys, and other bathroom items. Attach extra hooks to your shower rod that will hold a bag for bath toys and washcloths. Build shelves behind the vanity, over the toilet, and behind the door. You can also install over the door towel racks or place hooks on the inside of the bathroom door. All these small things can be used to add extra storage space in your bathroom and allow for you to have space without taking up too much room.

You can also add storage space in your bedroom by adding a headboard storage space unit. It is easy to build a headboard or you can purchase one for a minimal amount of money that can be used to store books, lamps and other things. Rolling bins can be used for under the bed storage for extra linens and other items.

Kitchens are another area in the home that can quickly become cluttered. You can do a few remodeling techniques around your kitchen that can save time and reduce the clutter around. If you have a shelf, place your microwave on it instead of on the counter. Under your cabinets, you can hang sharp knives of glassware to save drawer space, be sure they are high enough that they are out of the reach of children.

There are many things that can be done around your home to create storage space. Utilize some of the above tips and your imagination and free up the space in your home.
