Repairing versus remodeling a home

There are a variety of different things that you can do to improve the appearance of your home. You can do simple things from fixing up a couple of things to going through the effort of remodeling a home. Depending on how much money and time you want to spend on a house will depend on if you want to make some repairs or remodel a home. Here are some examples of repairing versus remodeling a home to help you decide which one you want to do.

The first example is just doing easy repairs such as repair any holes in the wall. This is something that can be easily done and does not cost a lot of money. After you do the initial patching of the holes you will probably need to go back and sand them down and repaint the wall that you have repaired. This might also help you to be able to find an excuse to paint your walls.

The second example is remodeling a room. This can be a lot more in depth. You might end up taking out walls or gutting a whole entire room. This will cost you a lot more money then just doing some repairs but your home might need it. It will also take a lot more time then just doing repairs. This is why you will want to make sure that remodeling is really the way you want to go before you go through the entire headache.

Resurface or replace tubs?

When you are remodeling a home, you will always want to look for ways that you can save a little bit of money! One of the most expensive rooms to remodel is the bathroom - there are so many fixtures that you need to either replace or resurface! One of the most expensive things to purchase for a bathroom remodel is the bathtub! If at all possible, you should try to find out if you can resurface your tub instead of replacing the tub. If there is enough existing value left in the tub, then you will want to see if it is possible to resurface the tub. This way, you can save a lot of money during your remodeling project! Here are some things to think about to help you decide if you should resurface or replace your tub:

Has the tub been burned, worn, or cracked? If your tub has been worn, burned or cracked, then the surface of your bathtub has been made a little more porous than it was intended to be! If your tub has become porous, you probably are able to see a lot of grime and dirt that has collected in the pores of the tub. If your tub is still in pretty good condition (i.e. the cracks are not large and they don't leak water), then you probably can just resurface your tub instead of replacing it! This way, you will be able to have a tub that looks just like new for only a fraction of the cost of replacing a tub! However, if the cracks are very serious and large in your tub, then it might be a better idea to simply replace the tub. It is likely that you will have to keep patching and resurfacing the tub every few years, and you might end up saving money by just getting a new tub once and for all!

How to repair a burnt out bathroom fan

If your bathroom fan suddenly stops working, chances are that the motor burned out. Fortunately, a burnt out motor is fairly easy to fix. It is somewhat more difficult than changing a light bulb but similar in a lot of ways. You follow the same steps of, 1) removing the cover, 2) taking out the burn out motor, 3) replacing the motor with a new one, 4) replacing the cover. You will probably even be able to use the same step stool that you use when replacing the light bulbs.

Removing the Cover
The first thing you have to do when replacing a burnt out bathroom fan is remove the fan cover. Of course, there are different types of fan covers and they come off in various ways. You will have to look at your fan cover to discover how to remove it.
Some fan covers are held to the ceiling with screws. If this is the case, unscrew. Look at the area around the screws on the fan cover. If there are holes extending away from the screw, you can loosing the screws, twist the fan cover, and remove it without removing the screws completely.
Other fan covers might be held in place by a groove mechanism inside the fan cover. If it doesn't appear that your fan cover is held on by screws but rather looks glued to the ceiling, try twisting. The cover may twist and then be free.
No fan covers are glued to the ceiling. You will just have to keep looking and trying things to find out how your cover comes off. While you are taking it off, make a mental note (or even physical note if remembering isn't your thing) about the steps involved in getting the cover off because you will need to reverse those steps when it is time to put the cover back on.

How to fix or replace your sink sprayer

A sink sprayer is a hose with a spray nozzle on your sink. Some sinks don't come with sprayers but they are quite handy and once you have one, you will miss it when it goes. Fortunately, the sprayer is a pretty simple device and not hard to fix or replace if something does go wrong.

Should I repair or replace my sink sprayer?
If your sink sprayer has been around for a long time, it makes more sense to replace the whole thing rather than try to repair it. Once the washers wear out, the O-rings are likely to follow. Other plastic parts will start to wear out as well. If your sprayer is wearing out, a brand new one only costs $10 to $15 dollars.
However, there are things that can go wrong that aren't associated with broken parts. For example, a blocked flow can be caused by something lodged behind the sprayer head. If you are having a problem like this, you will want to fix the problem rather than replacing the sprayer or sprayer head.
