Remodeling a home can pose some serious health and safety risks. Remodeling and construction safety is extremely important and should be your number one consideration when starting a remodel. Here are some things to consider and to keep in mind when you take on a remodeling project.

Keeping children safe
If you're planning to do any type of remodeling and you have children around or in your home you need to make sure that they are safe during the process. Construction sites to young children are extremely attractive. Large piles of dirt with "toy" tractors; what could be more fun to young children? If there is a large amount of demolition going on make sure the areas of demolition are taped off and children know exactly where they can and cannot go. Contractors are not hired to be babysitters for your children, but they do need to know how many children are around the house so that they are aware. Make sure that contractors know the ages of children as that will also give them a heads up on whether or not any of them are "mischief" prone.

They will be something that you can keep for a long time. You can put them anywhere and they last pretty much forever. If you are really worried about someone breaking into it, you can hide it somewhere where the workers won't be. How to ensure you don't remove a load bearing wall during a remodel

Introduction

When it comes to home remodeling, the trend right now is to create more open spaces. Often times this means the removal of a wall or two in order to accomplish a free-flowing look. People wanting to save some money by doing this kind of work themselves are unpleasantly surprised when they accidentally demolish a wall that is bearing the load of the house, therefore compromising the integrity of the entire home. Before planning any demolition work in your home remodel, make sure that you can accurately identify any load bearing walls and make sure that those supports remain untouched.

Instructions

Removing walls and changing the floor plan of your home may require a permit and inspection by a structural engineer. Remember that such costs may be inconvenient but the safest way to sleep at night is to hire a professional structural engineer who can give you the peace of mind that the demolition that you have planned is not going to leave you with the possibility that your house might fall down around you.

How to keep your construction site safe

Construction sites are notably dangerous areas. In order to ensure the safety of yourself and the people working on your site, you should follow some basic safety guidelines.

1. Know the law-there are laws in place to keep people safe on construction sites. You can learn quite a bit about construction safety laws by going to the OSHA website at oshasource.com. One of the laws that you should watch out for is the age restriction on construction job. Kids under sixteen years old are not allowed on construction sites. This is something to watch out for. Construction crews will often employ a young guy to do the "running" on a site. This means he will go get tools and clean up the site. The problem is, a kid under 16 is too young to be on the site in any capacity. Kids ages 16 and 17 can be on the construction site but there are laws limiting the jobs that they can do and the equipment they can use.

What should you know about permits and inspections?

Building a home is a process. There is the physical process of laying the foundation, framing the house, adding the roof, and finishing the interior and exterior. Also, a paperwork process includes a series of permits and inspections. Both processes need to go smoothly to keep your building experience pleasant and to ensure that your house if finished on schedule.

Permits
Before you begin building your home
Before you are even able to get a loan to build your home, you will have to obtain a building permit. Permit regulations and the documentation necessary to receive a permit vary by state. To find out exactly what is required in your state you can go online to the U.S. Census Bureau website at census.gov and look up the specific requirements for your state.
The most important thing to know about getting a building permit is that it is something that your contractor, not you, will take care of. There are a number of things that your contractor will need for the building permit. He will need a complete copy of the building plans, most states want two complete copies of the plans. He will also need statements from both the architect and the structural engineer associated with the foundation. Depending on the location of the house, there may be other necessary documentation.
Once the contractor gets the building permit approved, you will have to pay the permit fee. The permit fees are based on things like the size of your project and the location. This fee is non-negotiable and might cost between $400 and $6000 dollars depending on the projected value of your home. Unless your house is very big or very small, you can probably plan to pay in the neighborhood of $2000 and you should include this cost in with the construction costs.
