Saving money on your remodel by cutting out the middle man

Saving money is something that we are all looking to do when we take on a remodeling project at home. Many people are facing financial difficulty right now and need a way to get their remodeling job done right without spending so much money that it them becomes difficult to pay the mortgage. One great way to save money on your remodel without having to sacrifice quality or style is to look for ways to cut out the middle man. The middle man is the entity that buys from the manufacturer and sells to the retailer. Each time a piece of merchandise changes hands, the purchase price goes up, so that each participant in the sales process gets a portion of the sale profits. No middle man means that you can save at least that portion off the purchase price of the item.
Warehouse stores
Warehouse stores are the most popular place to buy wholesale items. Warehouse stores buy directly from the manufacturer and in some cases handle the manufacturing of certain products themselves. By buying in bulk from a warehouse store, you have the advantage of saving a lot of money. And, warehouse stores are not just for food. Most of the major warehouse stores carry things like ladders, power tool sets, vanities, lighting fixtures, furniture, flooring, etc. So, you can definitely take advantage of a warehouse store during your renovations
Buying parts directly from the manufacturer
You do not have to be a big name store to buy directly from the manufacturer. You can contact the manufacturer directly and ask to purchase straight from them. The only disadvantage to this method is that you will most likely have to do more work. For example, say you are remodeling a bathroom and need a new vanity and sink. You can go straight to the cabinet manufacturer and buy your vanity base for a lot less, but then you will also have to get a countertop, sink, fixtures and the tools required to put everything together. In larger projects, this method could save you money but if your remodel is small, you may be better off looking for ways to buy your materials more ready-made as the cost of the additional materials needed to assemble everything yourself may cancel out any savings. In most cases this will not be an issue. Smaller things that you will need a lot of such as flooring, drywall materials, siding, etc. are much more economical if you can find a way to buy them directly from the manufacturer. You may also be able to get a better warranty this way.
Discounts by buying as a set
One exception to the rules that were mentioned above is that there are some situations where the price of something like a bathroom vanity is actually cheaper when you buy the entire vanity (cabinets, fixtures, sink, counter top) from a single source. In some cases, the seller can provide you with a complete product at a cost that is less than what it would be for you to create the same look of the end product by buying each piece individually. By mass producing a finished product, the manufacturer, the retailer and the consumer are all able to benefit. The only setback is that the products that are available for purchase are not going to be customizable and there will likely be several other people in your area who have the same product in their home. If you are not overly concerned with having materials that are one-of-a-kind, this may be a smart way to go.
