Security for your home building construction site

Building a new home is very time consuming. At the beginning of construction there are no doors to lock and keep the building and all building materials safe. There is rarely anyone at the construction site at night or on the weekends. Because of this, security for your home building construction site can be problematic. There are ways to make it more secure for you and future neighbors.

First you may want to get in touch with your local police department and let them know about the construction. Appoint one person as the police contact and give that name and any contact numbers to the police department. Appointing one person is best to do so that time is not wasted if there is a problem at the construction site.

Mark all tools and other equipment that is being used. These tools or assets should be inventoried and tracked. This should be done on a regular basis to keep close tabs on all equipment. Recovery rate for construction thefts are only 10-15%. Possible ways to do this include:
A numbering system for all equipment and tools. You can even include boxes of nails or screws.
Engrave the tools or other equipment with some type of identifying mark. You should use two marks. One mark should be in an obscure place and the other one in a visible place.
Tools and equipment should be painted in a distinguishing color or with the company logo visible. Thieves are less likely to take things that are easily recognized.
Employees who bring their own tools should also have their tools visibly marked.
In inventory sheets mark down any distinguishing features of the tools or other equipment.
Keep any product identification numbers on file also.

The construction site itself should be behind some type of barrier. Any type of adequate barrier will discourage many troublemakers. Try to keep your construction site easily viewed by the public and any passing patrol cars. The more light and visibility you have on your construction site the better off you are in deterring thieves.

You may also have an office trailer or an equipment trailer at your construction site. This critical area will also need to have sufficient lighting and be visible from the street. You may need to install extra lighting for the duration of construction to keep these areas safe.

If you need keys for your construction project then you need to be able to track who has these keys. Keep the amount of keys issued to a minimum for easy tracking. Also keep in mind who you are giving the keys to, especially if the construction on this house is a remodel or add on. The keys to your home should always be secure. You may want to consider a key sign in or out list for easy accountability.

For vehicles or heavy machinery that may be on your construction site you will also need to take measures for security. Here are some ways to secure the vehicles on your construction property:
Parking of this machinery should be done in a way to deter any thieves or troublemakers. Try parking these vehicles in a train or circle with the smaller equipment near the middle.
Pull wires or drop buckets as a way to immobilize the equipment.
Company logos should once again be visible and the areas that these vehicles are parked well lit.
Engraving in a visible and non-visible place is a good idea for vehicles also. Use numbers, company logos or other identifying marks.
Keep a list of all Vehicle identification numbers.

Any or all of these measures should insure that your home building construction site stays secure.
