Should you rent or buy tools for a home remodel?

So you have decided to do a home remodel? Now its time to collect the tools, safety gear, and instructions you need to get started. There has been a long debate over buying or renting tools for home remodeling. Many people find that buying the tools will save them more money in the long run, especially if they have to pay per hour or per day of use for a particular tool.
Keep in mind that with home remodeling you should think twice before doing some of the work yourself such as:
- Extensive electrical work
- Plumbing work that involves digging and crawling under the house
- Roofing work (especially for a steep or high pitched roof)
- Removing and poring concrete flooring
- Siding work that involves scaffolding
- Any other task you are not confident handling
Even if you have the right tools for the project, do you know how to properly handle and use them? Be realistic about your skill levels with tools. Don't try to use a tool that you have never handled. You could end up creating a bigger problem and the finishing of your home remodel may look unprofessional.
You can buy tools for what you save on labor costs, but of you don't have experience, they aren't going to get you far. Think about how much money you are going to spend if you hire a contractor to remodel you home. Depending upon the size and features you want, the cost to remodel a single room is around $10,000 to $70,000. This is of course the price for a contractor. Since you are doing it yourself, study up on your house and know specific information about what you are remodeling.
By buying the parts and tools yourself, you will save yourself a lot of money in the long run. Cleaning, demolishing walls, screwing, unscrewing, sheet rocking, framing, painting, and other jobs can be done without skilled training.
Shop smart when buying your home remodel tools. High quality tools from manufactures like Dremel, Makita and Ryobi may cost more, but last longer. For small jobs, simple tools are fine and can be replaced for a small cost (hammers, screwdrivers, etc.)
Here are some common tools you will need for a bathroom remodel:
First, what are you considering changing? Are you considering changing your bathtub, your sink, your toilet? When it comes to remodeling your house, you will discover that that the tools required are totally dependant on the type of remodeling you are doing. Bathroom cabinets will require different tools from a new bathtub.
One tool you will need is a pair of pliers. Pliers are used in most basic home remodeling projects. The other tool you will need is a tape measure; a tape measure will come in handy even when you don't think you need it. A level is cheap and will be useful to ensure cabinets and wall hangings are centered and level.
Screwdrivers, and screw guns are also needed for remodeling projects. A ladder is another cheap tool to have on hand when you are installing lights, or painting. A small stepstool is also nice to have around if you do not have a ladder.
In addition to all the tools, keep in mind that you will need work gloves, safety goggles, and possibly safety hats. For an accurate listing of remodeling tools, you should view the remodeling project plans and instructions. Buying the smaller tools will save you money in the long run, but large tools that you will only use once will be cheaper to rent.
Think of remodeling tools as changing the brakes on a car, without the proper equipment, you won't be able to fix them!
