Stucco Texture Painting

With texture painting you can add both texture and color to your walls. It is a very popular technique of painting, and can add style and dimension to any room. In fact, texture painting has become a very popular option, or in other words, painting technique, in recent years. One of the more popular techniques of texture painting is the stucco look. It is using texture in your paint to give the look and feel of stucco on the inside of your house. This is a fun way to make a room inviting, cozy, and unique.
So, in order to do this in your home, you will need to know how to apply the technique of stucco texture painting. The following are some easy step by step instructions for how you can stucco texture paint any room of your home.
Step 1. Realize the stucco texture painting takes two coats of texture, and you want to make your texture paint as accessible as possible by dumping it in a 5 gallon bucket. Also, because it is textured, meaning there are fine particles of aggregates, such as sand, in it, you will wan to mix it thoroughly.
Step 2. Your second step is going to be cutting in, so that you only get the areas you want textured to have texture. So, load a 3-4" brush with the Texture Paint. Starting in the top corner, cut in around the perimeter of the wall or ceiling. Re-load the brush as necessary. You will get the best looking results if you use a quality nylon/polyester brush, such as those found on PaintingSuppliesDirect.com.
Step 3. Get ready to paint the rest of the room by placing a 5-gallon bucket grid into the bucket and a looping a roller cover onto a frame.
Step 4. Load your roller. Dip the roller cover into the paint, covering the entire nap area.
Step 5. Paint away. Starting in the upper corner of the cut-in section, place the loaded roller onto the wall. Working in a 4' X 4' section, roll a "W" onto the wall. You want to be sure that the texture is going on evenly.
Step 6. Continue rolling from the top edge of the wall to the bottom of your 4' X 4' section, being sure to roll into the existing cut-in area so that the area gets well blended and you do not see edges, but be careful not to get uneven texturing.
Step 7. Continue this process until the entire wall, or painting surface is complete. You do not want to pause in the middle of this process because once it dries it is harder to blend and even out the texture. Also, make sure that you work in small enough sections to allow yourself time to complete the section and blend the edges before it starts drying. Texture Paint has an open working time of approximately 10-15 minutes, so be sure to work in small 4' X 4' sections.
Step 8. After allowing the first coat to set for 15-20 minutes, begin applying the second coat for the traditional Stucco Knockdown style. This style is going to look great, so begin with confidence and be excited about your end results
Your second coat of paint is where the texturing pattern gets applied. There are various texturing techniques that could be used here. For the traditional Stucco Knockdown style, you would follow these steps:
- Step 1. Once again, keep in mind the time frame you have, and work in a 4' X 4' section. Apply a second coat to the area using your looped roller cover. Allow the completed 4' X 4' section to dry for 5 minutes.
- Step 2. Once it has dried for about 5 minutes, go from top to bottom or side to side using a putty knife or trowel to lightly smooth the surface. This is what gives you the great stucco look.
- Step 3. Once you have completed the first section proceed with the next 4' X 4' section.
- Step 4. Working from top to bottom or side to side use a putty knife or trowel to lightly smooth the surface.
- Step 5. Continue this process until the entire surface is complete, be sure to blend the edges, and make the sections you worked in something you would only know about.
- Step 6. Once the texture finish has dried 24 - 48 hours, apply a primer and paint a top coat if you want to. This is not necessary as you could use texture paint in the color you want. However, applying the primer will make the color easier to change in the future should you ever wish to.
