The benefits of remodeling during a recession

When money is harder to come by, there are those who shift the focus away from their homes and onto more basic needs like simply paying the mortgage or making sure that there is enough food on the table. However, if you are lucky enough to be one of those few who has the means and motivation to take on a remodel, there are many benefits to be had. In this article it will be explained why recessionary periods may be the best ones in which to start thinking about making your remodeling plans a reality.

Quantity and quality

One general truth about companies that are struggling financially is that they are often forced to see some money as better than no money. If they have to see a cut in their profits in order to make a sale, they would much rather have that than no sale at all. What this means for you as the consumer is that now you have the ability to get higher quality materials and even labor for much less than before. You are the one holding all of the cards so negotiating on price is perfectly acceptable. Shop around, have businesses match their competitor's best prices, and do not settle for less.

Increased value beyond your investment

Although you may be worried about your investment into your home now, if you plan on remaining in your home for at least as long as you believe that it will take to be freed of a recession, you stand to gain a lot more than you invested into your property. Remodeling during a recession is a risky investment, but if you know anything about investing you know that the risky investments are the ones that you want to make sure are in your portfolio. The value of your remodeling dollar will increase exponentially if you have made wise decisions (decisions that would make your home appealing to future potential buyers) and can be patient enough to wait for the economy to get back on its feet.

Picky, picky, picky

A recession allows you to have the luxury of being very selective. Because of a slow economy, there are employees looking for work and retailers looking to make a sale at costs that may be surprisingly less than you realize. Additionally, as the demand for these goods and services has decreased, you now have the option of having multiple parties fight for your business. For example, you can be very picky about the contractors you choose. Hold interviews, ask for references, and critique their work. For every contractor who does not pass you quality standards, you can bet that there are a half a dozen other workers who are hoping that you will give them a chance to work with you. You are giving people an opportunity to work and earn your dollar, so there is no need to feel rude about your appropriate selective methods.

Lower interest rates

Remodeling during a recession is also a good idea if you plan on taking out a loan for the project. Low interest rates are there for the taking. If you can get approved for your construction, home equity, or personal loan, you can benefit from the lowest interest rates in decades. One word of caution: of course, there is also the disadvantage that it will be harder to get a loan during a recession, so be sure that you know what funds are actually available to you before you start your remodeling process. Also, make sure that you do not go overboard. If you are planning on selling your home soon, take into consideration that most people will settle for a modest home over an extravagant home.
