Things to avoid so your construction site stays safe and clean

The last thing that you need as you are organizing the circus of events taking place in your home is for there to be an injury. Unfortunately, home construction workers are among those who are most frequently attended to in urgent care medical facilities because of a work related injury. With so many novice workers wielding hammer and saws in unsafe environments it is uncommon to not have an injury.

There are some things that you can do to lessen the chances that you or one of your workers will become injured. Here are just a few of the things that you should try to avoid so that your construction site stays safe and clean.

Avoid disorganization - Disorganization of the placement and storage of tools can be a recipe for disaster. There are many scenarios that can result from disorganization. For example, if a tool falls into disrepair it can become very dangerous to use, without an organizational system for what to do with such tools the problem goes undiagnosed. Additionally, improper storage can lead to additional damage and costs. Disorganization of the work being done in your home can also lead to unsafe or unclean conditions. Having too many people scheduled to do a job in a small room at one time is not going to end well. Careful planning of who needs to be in what space at what time will allow your project to run more smoothly.

Avoid clutter - Generally, construction crews are not known for their abilities to put things where they belong or to make sure to remain neat and clean while they are working. Yet clutter, especially things left on the floor, provides hazards of tripping and falling. With clutter everywhere it is also difficult to work as efficiently as possible as one thing or another is continually getting in your way. At the end of every work day (if not more often during the day) there ought to be a routine of some kind that involves putting things away and clearing the workspace as much as possible in preparation for the next day.

Do not avoid regular cleaning - It may seem counter-productive to clean your construction site regularly, but doing so will help your home to be safer and cleaner. Even though sweeping and picking up trash may seem like a never ending battle, doing so on a regular basis will prevent the over accumulation or trash and dust. Dust is one of the most inconvenient messes that a home building or remodeling project is notorious for. Regularly sweeping and disposing of this dust will prevent the mess from becoming out of control. Thick layers of dust on walking surfaces become very slippery. Cleaning up prevents some of the most common fall related injuries that are most common with a worksite.

Do not avoid wearing safety equipment - Safety equipment may be a bit of a burden at times but there are reasons why you and your workers should always wear proper safety equipment. The few additional minutes each day that it will take to put on gloves, pull down your mask, wear your goggles, etc. are nothing compared to the time it takes to visit the doctor because you hurt yourself and the time it takes to heal from that injury. Make sure that your workers are properly fitted with safety equipment. Ill fitting gloves can in some cases do more harm than good as this piece of safety equipment could get caught in a machine or pulled because of the loose material.

These suggestions here are by no means a complete list of the things that you should avoid so your construction site stays safe and clean. Evaluate your unique situation and see what areas you can improve in.
