Things you can do yourself in a remodel to cut costs

No matter how you look at it, remodeling jobs are costly. From materials to labor to unexpected costs, remodeling jobs, from laying tile to adding a wing on to your house, can be expensive.

However, you can cut costs during a remodel by doing some of the work yourself, regardless of how inexperienced you may be. This can help to save you a lot of money while you learn new skills that may come in handy again some day.

But before you grab a hammer or start demolishing part of your house, there are a few things you need to take into consideration.

Know what you're getting into. Often, what looks like simple remodeling jobs can actually be much more complex than they appear. Make sure you know every step involved in the remodeling project before you begin, or you could end up with an unfinished project.
Be honest with yourself. It may look easy, but you will need to honestly assess whether you will have the time, tools, and ability to complete certain remodels before you do them yourself. Having a professional come in during the middle of a project can end up costing you more than hiring him from the beginning.
Talk to friends. If you have friends who are handymen or who have done similar remodels, talk to them to find out realistically how long it will take and the work required.
Do your research. There are many do-it-yourself magazines, books, and websites that can walk you step-by-step through a wide range of remodeling projects. These are great reference points to help you do a remodel yourself and save money overall.
Enlist help. Even if you don't know much-or anything-about remodeling, you can still save money and do it yourself. Ask neighbors, friends, and co-workers who have experience if they can help you with certain parts of the remodel that you may not be familiar with. Often, you will find that people are more than willing to help.

The following are a few of the more common remodels you can do yourself in a remodel to cut costs.

Painting
It's hard to go wrong when it comes to painting, no matter how inexperienced you are; if it doesn't work, you can simply repaint over it. In addition, paint is fairly inexpensive, so you can make mistakes or change your mind about color and replace it easily without hurting your budget. Professional painters charge up to hundreds of dollars a room, and paint runs $20-$30 a can.

Tile
Many people also find they can tile their bathrooms or kitchens easily with some practice and the right tools. There are many excellent step-by-step books that will help you to lay tile correctly.

Bathroom remodel
Remodeling the bathroom can be tricky, as there are many pipes you will need to be careful for; you don't want sewage leaking anywhere. However, there are many things you should be able to do yourself without much problem; replacing faucets and other hardware, wallpapering, flooring, and tile are all common bathroom DIY projects.

Doing remodeling work yourself can be rewarding and cut costs at the same time. It is important to make sure you know what you're getting into before you begin the remodeling yourself.
