Tips for converting a garage into a bonus room
ishing that you had extra space and room in your home? Have you ever considered converting your garage into a bonus room! This is a great way for you to get more space in your home with a bonus room, and a lot of people who work at home prefer to convert their garage into an office space. Here are a couple of tips for converting your garage into a bonus room:
1. Determine to see if you need a permit: Generally, when you are building or remodeling anything in your home, you will need a permit. It is very likely that you will probably need to at least get electrical and building permits. However, by converting your garage into a bonus room, then might not need to use a permit. Find out with your county or city if you will be required to get a building permit for this change.
2. Check to see what plumbing and electricity you have: One of the great things about converting a garage into a bonus room is that garages usually have plumbing and electricity, at least to some degree. You probably will have to make some kind of upgrade to the plumbing and electricity, but the initial work is already done. Make sure that you know where all of your plumbing and electricity lines lie, so that your plumber and electrician will be able to easily use these lines in the building process!
3. What will your bonus room be? Another thing that you will want to consider is the purpose of your new bonus room. Your decision could partially depend on if you have an attached or an unattached garage. Sometimes the distance and space between an unattached garage and house can make the new bonus room become a really great office or recording studio. Having a bedroom or a living room in an unattached garage is not really a great idea, because there is such a distance between the new room and the rest of the house.
4. Remove all of the things in the garage: Although this might go without saying, it is important to remember that you should remove all of the things from the garage before you begin converting a garage into a bonus room. It is easy for your things to get ruined from all of the construction debris that accumulates during the home building process. If you leave things in the garage, they might get ruined with materials like concrete or paint.
5. Wall insulation: Another thing that you might want to consider when converting a garage into a bonus room is wall installation. This is a way that you can ensure that you will stay warm and cozy in your new bonus room! When converting a garage into a bonus room, you want to make sure that you will not lose any of the heat that you are putting into your new room, and insulation can make this happen!
6. Consider only converting half of the garage: If you have a double garage, you might want to consider only converting one half of your garage into another room. This will leave you with some space so that you can still park your car somewhere! If you decide to convert your whole garage into a room, however, then you might want to consider the option of a carport so that you can still have a place for your car. However, if you do add a carport, check to make sure that this will fit within the building regulations for your county or city.
