Tips for keeping your workers on time and honest
There are a lot of things that you have to deal with when you are a contractor or a sub-contractor. One of the biggest things you have to keep track of is your workers and making sure that they are on time and honest. Here are some tips for keeping your workers on time and honest.
The first tip is to make unexpected visits at different times of the day. This will help you to get an idea of who is doing what and if it corresponds with what they are putting on their time sheet. This will also help your workers to know that you can show up at anytime so it might make them more cautious of being late or help them to not take long lunch breaks because you might show up.
The second tip is to work with your workers. Have everyone meet at either the office or the shop and have a team meeting each morning and then give out assignment and check on people through out the day. This will help to ensure that you know what time people are coming to work because they will need to show up for the morning meeting. You will also get an idea of people that are hard working by driving past different job sights and seeing what type of progress there is.
The third tip is if you are hiring workers. To make sure that you get an honest worker you will want to check references and see if any previous employers have had problems with theft or anything with the particular employee that you are looking at hiring on. This will help you to get an idea of how different people are and what type of work ethic they have.
The fourth tip is to give encouragement. Make sure that you are letting your workers know that they are appreciated and that their work is noticed. If people feel appreciated and actually feel like part of a company they are more willing to be loyal to a company and make sure that they are doing things that will benefit the company like being on time. Also people that are dedicated to their work will usually be honest because they don't want to do anything that might jeopardize their job.
The fifth tip is to make sure that you have reviews every so often so that you can talk to each employee and see if they have any questions or concerns. This will help employees to feel like they are appreciated and what they have to say matters. If there are complaints you will want to make sure that you look into them and get them resolved so that people know if there is a problem they can go to you. If people know that they can trust you it might help them to want you to have trust in them also.
The sixth tip is to make sure that you let your employees know what is expected of them. Instead of just sneaking around seeing if you can find your workers doing something wrong let it be known that you expect your employees to be on time and honest. Then let them know you will be checking up on them every so often to make sure that your expectations are being met. You will also need to make sure that you do the surprise visits so that your workers know that you are serious.
The seventh tip is to ask the clients that are hiring you and your workers to do for them how their experiences were with certain workers and if they have any complaints. This will help you get an idea of things you need to address to different workers.
The most important thing to do is to make sure that you let your workers know that you are serious and that you are not going to take workers being late and dishonest lightly and that their will be consequences. This will be your best defense got keeping your workers on time and honest.
