The hardware in your home has a lot to do with the appearance of your cabinet doors and drawers in every room in your home. There are a lot of things to think about when you are replacing the hardware in your home. Here are a few tips that may help you with your hardware project
How much work do you want to do? If you are like most of us you will want to keep the work on your part down to a minimum. Remove a piece of hardware from the cabinets or drawers or both, one of each different kind that you want to replace. You will need to take this with you. If you want to keep the extra work as minimal as possible use the existing hardware to choose the new hardware you would like to replace it with. You will need to make sure that the hinges, knobs, or handles that you are purchasing will fit in the now vacant holes. This will prevent you from having to create new holes to accommodate the new hardware. If the handle that you are trying to replace has two bolts to attach it to the door or drawer, you will need to ensure that the new handles also have two bolts and that they are the same distance apart and the same diameter in size. It is possible that the new hardware bolts may not be long enough when you get them home, usually you can substitute the old bolts on the new hardware.
When moving into a new home it is always a good idea to change the locks immediately. You have the option of having a locksmith come to your home and rekey the locks for you, but chances are you will want to replace the door knobs and dead bolts. This way if you are planning on changing the fixtures in the house later on, you can go ahead and change these so that eventually everything will match the color scheme that you have already chosen. You can purchase new door knobs and dead bolts at a hardware store. To be certain that your door knob and dead bolts have the same lock you should have the option of purchasing a door knob and dead bolt together in one package. Most people will want to be able to use just one key to open their front and back door, they may even want that key to also open their garage door or other doors in their home or building they may have on their property. It is a simple thing to purchase several door knobs and dead bolts that will all use the same key that you can install easily yourself in your home. Ask someone at your hardware store to help you or there is a series of numbers on the packaging that indicate the locking code for the locks inside. You should be able to find at least two or three, sometimes more, that will have the same series of numbers. This indicates that each of these locks open using the same key. Of course, you will want to double check that all of the keys that you are provided with lock and unlock each set that you have purchased before you install all of the door knobs and dead bolts in the doors in your home.
