Tips for the first time remodeler

So you bought your DIY books and you are setting off to do some remodeling in your home. Remodeling is a great alternative to buying a new house in that you can save money doing it yourself and it will raise the value of your home through sweat equity. Many homes have so much potential if time is taken to improve their aesthetic appearance. Here are some tips for the first time remodeler.

The key to remodeling is preparation. You know all of the sayings, measure twice cut once, righty-tighty, lefty-loosey, etc. These things will help you along your way as you start your projects. A problem that many home remodelers run into is that they are short on supplies when they are knee deep in the project. This wastes time and causes serious headaches for you and anyone working with you. Before you start, work out a plan and figure out precisely what you are going to do. Go out with a list of supplies that you need and buy them so that they are available to you the moment they are called for. This may sound obvious and unnecessary to mention, but people cut corners all the time and shoot themselves in the foot when a crucial moment arises in a project and they aren't prepared for it.

Work at a good pace. The definition of good depends on your own personal skill level. If you have never done what you are about to take on, this would be good would mean "slow" to you. Don't get overconfident because problems will arise and blowing over them can ruin a project. Work at a pace that you can sensibly accomplish all of the directions. For example, if you are painting a bedroom, take the time to tape all of the corners and to lay down paper on the floor. When you are painting, be sure to paint slowly enough so that you don't miss spots or put paint on too thinly. When the first coat is put down, take the time to let it dry before putting on the second coat. This applies to everything that you do. Know the steps of the project and do them in order and give each one its proper time frame. Doing this will aid you in your efforts to accomplish your project.

Before starting a project, take a look at what people have done before you. Before accepting the pictures and designs in the book as doctrine that you will follow, take time to talk to people who have "been there" and "done that." They will have valuable information to aid you in your project. Many times there are simple tips and tricks that can save a lot of time. Wouldn't it be nice to not ever have to say "well that would have been nice to know before I put the tile floor down?" Knowing that you completed a project in the most efficient way possible along with having great quality will make the satisfaction of completing the project that much more gratifying.

Know how to use your tools. There are so many visits to the emergency room every day from people who have seriously hurt themselves mishandling their power tools. Using a power tool is serious business and should be treated as such. They are great devices that will make your project look professional when you are done, but for goodness sakes, be careful and know what you are doing.

The new remodeler will find success from preparation, advice, a plan, and good tools to put together your supplies. Doing these things will make your project be awesome and everyone jealous of your fabulous skills.
