Should you rent or buy tools for a home remodel?

So you have decided to do a home remodel? Now its time to collect the tools, safety gear, and instructions you need to get started. There has been a long debate over buying or renting tools for home remodeling. Many people find that buying the tools will save them more money in the long run, especially if they have to pay per hour or per day of use for a particular tool.

Keep in mind that with home remodeling you should think twice before doing some of the work yourself such as:


  • Extensive electrical work

  •  Plumbing work that involves digging and crawling under the house

  •  Roofing work (especially for a steep or high pitched roof)

  •  Removing and poring concrete flooring

  •  Siding work that involves scaffolding

  •  Any other task you are not confident handling

Even if you have the right tools for the project, do you know how to properly handle and use them? Be realistic about your skill levels with tools. Don't try to use a tool that you have never handled. You could end up creating a bigger problem and the finishing of your home remodel may look unprofessional.
