Having the right tools is important for any job and can make it go more smoothly. This is especially true when you are remodeling a part of your home and especially one of your bathrooms. Here is some information on getting and using the right tools for your basic plumbing job.

Whether you plan on using the tools frequently or not, they are always great to have around the house and can be used and many different applications. If you plan on using the tools a lot, you should look into buying top of the line materials. If not, you are probably OK getting something that will just do the job and that will be just fine for your job. However, there are some tools that can be used for many different types of jobs around the house and that aren't specifically for plumbing. You should probably consider buying higher quality tools in this category so they will last longer.

One of the most basic and important tools that you can have on hand for any plumbing job is a good wrench. There is such a wide selection of wrenches available that it may be difficult to choose the right one. Adjustable wrenches are the best ones and are the most likely to get you the right grip on whatever you are tightening. Some specific names of wrenches available and that are used by plumbers are socket wrenches, pipe wrenches, and a basin wrench.

Pliers should be the next tool that anyone taking on a plumbing job should have available. Tongue and groove pliers are the most commonly used and can also be great for other jobs around the house. Some plumbers prefer water pump pliers which have jaws but tongue and groove pliers will still work well for most plumbing jobs. Water pump pliers are also frequently called plumber's pliers or channel lock pliers. Depending on what kind of plumbing job you are going to take on, you will also need a pipe cutter. This is especially necessary if you are using metal piping and not PVC or plastic pipe. Pipe cutters come in many different sizes and are often used with soapstone, which is used for marking the pipe where you want to cut it.

You really never know what kind of plumbing emergency could come up, so it's a good idea to have an emergency kit set aside to always have on hand the tools you'll need. It's also a good idea to have a crescent wrench on hand so that you can use it on any nut or bolt needed. This is another tool that is just great to have around the house and that you will probably use for many other jobs over the years.

An emery cloth is also something that is good to have in your toolbox, especially if you are going to be doing more than just simple repairs. Although washers and bolts are sometimes specific for a job or particular tool, it can still be a good idea to have some extras on hand. It's also a good idea to have joint compound, Teflon tape, some nuts and bolts and other similar tools in your kit too.

Many people are hesitant to spend the amount of money on tools they will need to do all the possible plumbing jobs around the house, but investing a few hundred dollars on the right tools is a small investment and will save you a lot of money doing the repairs on your own. Taking on your own plumbing jobs can be challenging at first, but having the right tools for the job can help you to get it done properly the first time and will save you a lot of money in the long run.
