If you are dreaming of remodeling your home but know you don't have the money to pay cash for all of the work, you might consider doing what many people in your situation do--get a home remodeling loan.

A home remodeling loan is a loan you get from a bank that is used toward remodeling or updating your home. This type of loan usually has a minimum amount you have to borrow, generally around $5,000, and the money must be used for your home. You can used remodeling loans to add an addition to your house, redo your kitchen or bathrooms, or put in a new swimming pool.

When you apply for a home remodeling loan, you will need some information for the bank so they can determine whether or not you qualify. This will differ for every bank, but for remodeling, it will include at minimum the following:

  • Social Security Number
  • Date of birth
  • Home address for past 2 years
  • Employment information for past 2 years
  • Driver's License or secondary form of identification, such as a passport
  • Credit score

Other banks may require more information, including:

  • Current assets (money you already have, including bank account statements)

  • Current liabilities (these are the debts you pay each month and include things like student loans, child support, car payments, and your mortgage)

It's best to be prepared when you go to get a home remodeling loan, so make sure you contact them first to ensure you have all the necessary information for applying for a home remodeling loan. You can also take the loan application home, and then take it home and fill it out.

Once the bank has all the information required, they will then determine your debt to income ratio. This percentage tells them whether or not your income is sufficient to handle the new debt of a home remodeling loan.

Your credit score will also play a major role in your ability to obtain a loan, so it's important to make sure it is in good standing and free of blemishes. Many lenders are much stricter now than they used to be, so it's important you are prepared with good credit. You can find out if there are any dings on your credit by getting your free credit report (you are entitled to one free one per year) from any of the three reporting agencies--Equifax, TransUnion, or Experian. If you get your credit report back and find that your score is low or you have accounts in collections, it is best to clear those up before applying for a home remodeling loan.

Apply online

Many banks will also allow you to apply online. This is convenient and private and will give you your answer on how much of a home remodeling loan you can get quickly.

Shop around.

It's always a good idea to shop around for any type of loan for lower interest rates and other terms. For example, some banks will offer no-collateral loans for home remodeling. Also, make sure you look around for a fixed rate loan; that way, you know your interest rate on the loan will never go up.

When applying for a home remodeling loan, it's best to know what the requirements are first. The above are a few of the things you will need to take to the bank to get a home remodeling loan.
