What you should consider when looking at lighting options

The right lighting in your home can help establish the style and character you are looking for. There's more to lighting though than just putting in a central ceiling fixture and combining it with a couple of lamps here and there. Great lighting requires several different elements but how do you know where to start? This article will give some helpful suggestions on what you should consider when looking at lighting options for your home.
Consider the size and color of your room
The first thing you will want to consider before choosing what type of lighting scheme you want in your room is the size and the color. If you have a small room with little natural light you are going to want to choose lighting that is bright and illuminates the room. This will help it feel more open and not so gloomy. And vice versa; in a room that has a lot of natural light and is bigger you won't need a ton of light to open up the space. The size and color of any room can make a big difference in what type of lighting you choose to go with.
Consider the type of lighting and if saving energy is a big deal to you
When I say "type" of lighting I mean what kind of bulb do you want to use. There are several different choices, the two most common are regular incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent light bulbs. An incandescent light bulb will generally give you a little more light that a fluorescent bulb but will use much more energy to run. You will also more than likely be changing them much more than a fluorescent light bulb. With that in mind, if you consider buying fluorescent light bulbs they will keep your utility bill down and last you much longer. Some however will give a slight tint to the lighting and make it see a little darker. They have come out with some new ones though that may work better than the old ones and provide more light to the room than the older models.
Consider your lighting choices
There are several different types of lighting choices:
- Hanging ceiling lights are the most common type of light fitting because they offer a variety of shade styles in several different types of fabric. It will give you a bright central space but with shadows around the edge.
- Recessed lighting or semi-recessed lighting that is spaced nicely will give you a good balanced clear light to any room. A recessed light will generally spread light across a wide area and with the swiveling lights they can provide light to many different places.
- Lamps can provide a different atmosphere to your room and give just the right amount of light to the right setting. If for example you are placing reading lights in bedrooms they should be tall enough to shine onto the pages of the book but not in your eyes. Floor lamps can be positioned behind objects in a room to create a dramatic effect.
- Wall mounted lights are usually used to provide illuminated for specific areas like a hallway or bathroom vanity. They can also provide extra light in places where a ceiling fixture is not feasible.
When it comes to lighting it's important to find the best light that will work for your needs. Consider the previous suggestions as you go out and look for new light fixtures for your home.
