When not to do it yourself

Because of the high cost of remodeling jobs, many people are tempted to grab some tools and a how-to book and give it a try themselves. In some cases, this is a great way to save money. In other cases, however, doing it yourself can cause some major problems and end up costing you more to fix it than it would have to hire a professional.
If you are unsure of whether or not you should try to do your own remodeling projects, the following are some tips for when not to do it yourself:
- The job involves plumbing or electrical. Unless you have prior experience with plumbing or electrical work, trying to rough plumb a new bath yourself or wire a basement can be risky and end up costing you in water damage or other potential problems. In addition, not knowing where to put the right wires could cause an electrical problem that could result in fires or something more dangerous. However, there is no reason why you can't do something less complicated with regards to plumbing or electrical or wiring, like install a new faucet or hang a ceiling fan.
- You don't have the experience required. While there are many tutorials, classes, and how-to books that will let you know how to do pretty much everything, a certain amount of experience is needed in order to do a job properly. When it comes to making costly renovations on your home, it's not the time for trial and error. You will also need to take into account whether you know how to properly use the required tools; for example, a paintbrush is much easier to operate than a band saw.
- You don't realistically have enough time. A project may look easy to do, but many times it will end up being more time consuming than you initially expected, especially if you are doing it after work and on weekends. What you thought would only take a couple weeks could turn into months. While this may not be a big deal with something minor, if your remodels make it so a bathroom or the kitchen are out of service for awhile, make sure you are ok with that before going ahead with the remodel. Otherwise, it might just be worth it to you to hire someone.
- You don't have the right tools. Spending a fortune on costly tools that you will only use for one project might not be a good investment. If you are going to reuse the tools, then it may be a good idea to go ahead and buy them. If you are not, however, then it could be more cost effective to hire a professional who will do a guaranteed job than it would be to buy your own tools and try it yourself. At the same time, if your tools are not working properly or your ladder is rusty or wobbly, you shouldn't try to make due with what you have, as it could be dangerous and lower the quality of your work.
