Building a custom home is a dream for many people.  Traditional. These are some of the most popular floor plan styles in the country. Often grand in appearance, the roofs are steep with front facing gables and the exteriors are often brick, stucco, or clapboard. The interiors are typically very spacious.
 Ranch. This type of home usually has an "L" shaped floor plan with all the bedrooms together on one side of the house with the master separated from the other bedrooms on the main floor.
 Colonial. Reminiscent of early America, Colonial floor plans are often rectangular in shape with two floors. The exteriors usually have columns and shutters. The inside floor plans of traditional Colonial style floor plans generally consist of a center hallways with large square rooms on each side and two additional rooms in the back.

Once you know the type of home you'd like, you can then narrow your search to find the perfect blue prints for your home. The following are a few places that are good resources for home building plans.

Magazines
Entire magazines are devoted to nothing but floor plans for you to browse through. These plans will include floor plan details and measurements. If you like them, you can order the blueprints. You can find these magazines in book stores or magazine aisles in the grocery store.

Books
The local library is a good resource for finding home building plans. Entire books have been written about home building plans, with resources for ordering information. However, these books are not always completely up to date, so make sure the book was written within the past couple of years.

Software
If you want a truly custom home, you can get special software that allows you to design your own home plans from the ground up.

Online
The internet is a great place to go to find home building plans. There are a number of websites that showcase home plans. Some of them are even interactive, so you can have a better idea of what your home will look like once built.

Choosing home building plans is a big decision. There are many places you can go to find the perfect home building plan for your dream home, or you can design your own.
