Working with the weather, not fighting it, during a remodel or home building project
There are many things that you will not be able to predict when you are working on a home remodel or a home building project. While many people first turn their thoughts to unreliable contractor time tables, few remember the factors of the weather and how they can drastically affect the timeline of a project. Bad weather can affect any home improvement project, no matter how much of the exterior of the house is being worked on.
When working with the weather it is important not to fight what you cannot control. If the weather hinders your remodel or home building project, simply remember to do something else when the weather doesn't allow you to work. Timelines become most strained when builders and contractors stop all work because one item in the sequence of building cannot be completed due to the weather. Simply encourage them to move on to a different project.
If you have to do things outside, find ways to keep your work area covered. Tarps and large tents may be extra costs, but the cost for this outdoor covering is likely to be much less than the cost of postponing finishing dates and paying for a project to go over schedule. Canopies are also a great way to keep your work out of the rain. Remember to use all of the outdoor space to its fullest. If you have a garage, consider renting a storage unit and moving the larger items in that garage elsewhere so that the covered space can be used by workers when the weather gets bad.

Garages are also great work spaces because there is no need to worry about damaging the floors. Most garages do not even have sheet rock so there is no concern about scratching, denting, or otherwise damaging the walls of your garage. What's even more appealing is that garage doors provide a secure place to store tools and equipment when the work day is over. Although you may be able to work under tarps, tents, and canopies during the day, at night when the weather can really get nasty you will want a secure and weather resistant place to store all of your expensive tools, materials and supplies.
If it's cold, wear gloves. This is usually a good idea anyway. If you are doing some of the repairs on your house on your own, inclement weather can mean a great deal of discomfort. After all, no one likes being cold and wet. So do all that you can to prepare yourself for bad weather. Dress warmly and use footwear that will not only protect you from slips on wet flooring, but that will also provide your feet with warmth. It sounds elementary that you should dress warmly for cold weather, yet many homeowners neglect to do so and find themselves feeling uncomfortable and ill. Both of which hinder the building progress on a home.
Working with the weather and not against it is something that is going to take a conscious effort to achieve. You will need to be committed to finishing your project on time and willing to be uncomfortable, if needs be, in order to do so. If you are planning on hiring a team to do some of the work for you, make sure that they too are committed to staying on schedule and do not hesitate to ask them what they pal on doing when the weather is not exactly cooperating. Whether it is a remodel or home building project keep in mind that time is money and that you will want to keep yourself and your team on track and adapt to the obstacles in order to protect your investment.
